I dig Witchery! My planned film <3

I cried on my 11th birthday, sat at the door waiting for my letter to Hogwarts to arrive, and realising that it probably never would. Of course it would have come by Owl.
This didn’t stop me from loving all things magical and looking into it for the rest of my life and I’ve found that there’s so much interesting stuff that goes along with it.
From curses, familiars, and local legends, witches have so much twisted and complicated history, with many women persecuted for ‘fraternising’ with the devil.
There have been so many horror films about this, so many books… but i want to make a film, a stop-motion film about dogma, persecution, segregation and all of the things, including our humanity that we lose when people do terrible things to each other.
I had a character in mind, inspired a little by the inner me, the dolls I’ve been making as of late and even a little by Tank Girl.
‘Emestine’ is the only concrete piece of this film so far- and her character is set in stone. Brash, steadfast, haphazard, and wholly inelegant with a propensity to swear (something learned from her grandmother, also a witch). She is clever, but in a street way rather than a book sort of way, and has looked after herself in the prosecution and hunting of witches, preferring to travel alone and avoid others. Her name I soon found is German and can mean ”serious” or ”direct”.

”People with this name tend to be passionate, compassionate, intuitive, romantic, and to have magnetic personalities. They are usually humanitarian, broadminded and generous, and tend to follow professions where they can serve humanity. Because they are so affectionate and giving, they may be imposed on. They are romantic and easily fall in love, but may be easily hurt and are sometimes quick-tempered.”

The film will be suggestive rather than blatant, so hopefully suitable for all, and will have stylised pieces from 17th and maybe 18th century.

I started making her a while back and was sidetracked in the meantime, at one point i almost fell out of love with her but I still have the plans and designs, and fully intend to try to try to make this happen 🙂
Big dreams start small, and if I can plan this enough I might be able to get funding for my beloved project. I still have a long way to go though!

First puppet prototype for Emestine- i wanted her to have flyaway red hair, something that was once considered a sign of witchcraft. There was a reason the Weasley’s were red heads!

I’ll be brainstorming tomorrow, and sketching as much as I can, so I will keep my blog updated as to the progress of my little dream film.
